Picking Up After Your Dog

Picking up your dog’s mess is part of being a responsible dog owner. We know it’s not pleasant, but it’s incredibly unpleasant for someone else to step in it!

Doggy Poop Bags

Picking up after your dog is not only common courtesy, but your duty as a responsible pet owner.  Taking your dog for a walk down the street or through the park is something you can both enjoy, but leaving their mess creates a bad smell for others and causes annoyance and upset if someone accidentally steps in it.  When taking your dog for a walk (away from your home), you enter public property and as the owner of the dog, any mess they make is your responsibility to clear away.

Responsible Pet Ownership

It’s Mess, not Fertiliser!

Animals like cows, horses, chickens, sheep, goats, and llamas produce waste that serves as effective fertilizer due to their plant-based diets. However, dog waste cannot be used as fertilizer. In fact it can harm grass due to its acidity, potentially killing it if not promptly removed. This high acidity results from the protein-rich diets of most dogs which generate nitrogen as a by-product, acting oppositely to fertilizer. Additionally, dog waste contains elevated levels of phosphorus. When washed into bodies of water such as lakes, streams, or rivers, phosphorus can deplete oxygen levels vital for fish and other aquatic life, and promote the growth of harmful algae. Moreover, it serves as a significant source of pathogens like fecal coliform, posing health risks to humans and wildlife.

Diseases and Parasites

Even when your dog appears healthy, they can still transmit harmful diseases through their waste. Dog faeces harbor various germs, including bacteria and parasites, capable of causing illness in other dogs and humans. Bacteria like E. coli and salmonella are among those found in dog waste, posing risks if not properly disposed of. These harmful pathogens can persist in the soil, posing a threat to both people and their pets if left unattended. Hence, neglecting to pick up after your dog can endanger others by exposing them to dangerous bacteria.
