Room to Hop: Create the space your rabbit deserves

Space is crucial for keeping your rabbits happy and active. Naturally, rabbits need plenty of room to hop, run, and dig. Whether indoors or outdoors, they require a secure environment.
A rabbit’s hutch should be spacious enough to allow them to exercise and stand fully on their hind legs without their ears touching the roof. The minimum space recommended for two rabbits is 3m x 2m x 1m (10ft x 6ft x 3ft).

Hiding Places

Rabbits need constant access to safe hiding spots, shielded from the sights and smells of predators like birds of prey, ferrets, dogs, cats, and foxes. A secure, fenced area ensures your rabbits are protected and out of reach of these threats. Caring for your rabbit involves not only providing a secure environment, but also ensuring their overall wellbeing. This includes a proper diet, regular grooming, social interaction, exercise, and routine veterinary care. By focusing on these aspects, you can help your rabbit thrive in a safe and nurturing environment.

Cosy Comfort: The Best Bedding for Your Rabbit

At Rooke’s, we recommend soft straw as the ideal bedding for your rabbit. It’s more affordable than shavings and serves as an excellent insulator. The hollow strands in soft straw trap warm air, keeping your rabbit cosy and comfortable. It’s also absorbent, effectively soaking up any liquids. Remember, as temperatures drop, your rabbit will need more bedding to snuggle into for warmth during the night.

Alternatively, you can use wood shavings as bedding. However, be sure to avoid shavings made from pine or cedar, or those with an unknown wood source, due to the high levels of phenols they produce.

Better Together: The Importance of Rabbit Companionship

Rabbits are naturally social creatures so they thrive with the companionship of their own kind – never keep a rabbit alone. In the wild, they live in large groups or families, making it essential for them to have a friend. Ideally, pair a male and female rabbit, but make sure they’re neutered before introducing them or you’ll quickly have a growing rabbit family!

Spending time with your rabbits daily is also crucial. Human interaction and play help them socialise and prepares them for grooming, strengthening your bond with them.
